John 8:12 when Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but have the light of life.”
First John 1:5 This is the message we have heard from him, and he declared to you, God is the light in him there is no darkness at all.
Something startled Jake awake. Opening his eyes, he had a strange feeling. This couldn’t be right; he must be dreaming. His room generally wasn’t this dark, even on a dark night. The electricity must be off.
Jake could not see a thing, not even his hand in front of his face. He wanted to get out of bed, but where would he go? How would he find his parent’s room when it was so dark? Jake sat, blinking, and rubbing his eyes. They began to adjust to the darkness, but his mind would not allow any comfort as the dark became heavier.
Finally, a small shadow or what he thought might be light appeared. Jake called out, “is someone there? What do you want?” When no answer came, he wondered if it was more of a bad dream. Soon a light began to fade through the window. Jake was able to look outside and see a few stars. Eventually, the moon peeked out from a cloud, and things felt lighter, comforting even. Looking around his room, Jake noticed little lights from clocks and chargers. The relief was welcoming.
Have you ever been in a total blackout?
I don’t mean just going outside late at night with a bright moon and 1 million stars. I mean in total darkness, where you can’t see your hand in front of your face. It’s an unsettling feeling. The darkness is like a big heavy blanket wrapped around you so tight it is suffocating.
God did not want us to feel this burden. He put the moon and the stars in the sky to help dispel the darkness. When Adam and Eve sinned, a dense blanket fell over the earth when they became separated from GOD. GOD did not want the darkness to be suffocating, so he sent his light, His son.
Take a black sheet of paper into a dark room. Hold it in front of your face. What can you see? Now make a pinhole in the center of the paper. Can you see more with the small hole?
Try putting several holes in the paper, give your eyes time to adjust, if it’s a super dark room you may need to move the paper in front of a crack of light. You won’t see the whole light, but as your eyes adjust, you will notice a shadow of light dimly lit on the paper. The more holes, the lighter. Take a small flashlight and shine it on the back of the paper. (DO NOT use a laser light) Now turn the paper toward the ceiling or a wall. How far does the light go?
Jesus is like the moon; we are his pinholes shining His light to others in the dark.
Leave the flashlight on behind the paper and flip on the light switch to the room. What do you see now? The place is full of light, but you can faintly still see the pinholes of light on the wall. Again, give your eyes time to adjust. Jesus is the Sun/SONshine.
Dear precious LORD, Please help us to understand the meaning of the verse in John 8:12. Let us look for your light in all things.
Psalm 112:4 New International Version (NIV)
4 Even in darkness, light dawns for the upright, for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous.
Ephesians 5:8 New International Version (NIV)
8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light
